1. Using garden soil or regular potting soil straight from the bag
It compacts, stays soggy and brings pests. Always make or buy a well-draining terrarium mix.
2. Overplanting
Plants grow. Leave space and choose slow-growing species for small containers.
3. Too much direct sun
Greenhouse effect inside glass can easily reach lethal temperatures. Bright indirect is safest.
4. No drainage layer
Roots sitting in standing water is the fastest way to root rot.
5. Watering like a houseplant
A closed terrarium can go months without water once balanced. Start very conservatively.
6. Ignoring airflow
Even closed terrariums benefit from occasional venting, especially in the first weeks.
7. Adding animals too early
Springtails and isopods are great but only once the terrarium has stabilised for a few weeks.
The good news? Most of these are easy to prevent if you plan the build with our tools and checklist.
